Learn more about recreation, culture, and entertainment opportunities in Harrison County here! There are several attractions one can visit along three scenic byways or just pass through the Loess Hills. 

As you visit Harrison County, enjoy your stay and experience the area’s natural beauty and small town values residents hold dear. Home to three scenic byways and the Loess Hills State Forest, driving here is an experience in itself. Look for the Lincoln Highway National Heritage Byway, Loess Hills National Scenic Byway, and Western Skies Scenic Byway signs and follow them as they gently curve and flow through the county. 

Stop by the Harrison County Welcome Center and Historical Village to pick up tourism information and browse through the gift shop with Iowa-made products and Loess Hills wine. DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge will revive your senses, the Wisecup Farm Museum will take you back to yesteryear, and the Watson Steam Train will make you feel like a kid again. The Loess Hills Lavender Farm, and Sawmill Hollow Family Farm as well as Small’s Fruit Farm, bring you a wide array of tastes, scents, and locally grown products to enjoy. These are just a sample of the wide array of our museums and state and national historical sites.

Many annual events take place in Harrison County as-well-as at other locations nearby. Here’s a list of annual events celebrated in Harrison County.

Welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus during the Lighted Parade the first Friday in December each year. Shops open late. Community-sponsored cookie walk.

Third weekend in September. An agricultural tourism event featuring tours, speakers, educational programs, plant sale, product samples, kid’s activities, and music at Sawmill Hollow Family Farm located north of Missouri Valley. 712-648-2432, sawmillhollow.com

A 5K run and Kids K run held in Missouri Valley and hosted by the Missouri Valley Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call 712-642-2553.

Dunlap gets in the patriotic spirit with a 4th of July parade, fireworks and a celebration that includes food, games, and fun for all ages, on the 4th of July.

An autumn bicycle ride along the Loess Hills of Western Iowa in mid-September. The ride starts at the Mondamin Baptist Church and includes three different route options. A 29-mile loop travels through Pisgah, Little Sioux, River Sioux, and back to Mondamin. Two other routes will have more miles and more “hillage” and will include a trip through Magnolia. First weekend in August. Held at the Dunlap Fairground, this old-fashioned county fair offers exhibits, horse show, tractor pull, 4-H exhibits, livestock, and lots of food. 712-643-1294

A festival all about lavender held in mid-July. The Loess Hills Lavender Farm, located eight miles north of Missouri Valley, hosted its first Lavender Stock in 2015 and has made this an annual event. 712-642-9016, loesshillslavender.com

Held the fourth weekend in August. This celebration includes a parade, carnival, dance, barbecue, and dinner at the Legion Hall in Little Sioux. 712-649-2211

Third Saturday in May. Calling all cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors! Enjoy kids and family activities, goods, shopping, music, and food in Logan City Park. Also, check out the Logan Fire Department Open House. Car show registration ($20) from 9 a.m. to noon; awards at 3 p.m. in Logan City Park. Sponsored by the Logan Chamber Committee. This annual spring event held in April features motorcycle hill climbing at the Logan Rock Quarry just off Highway 30 on the east edge of Logan. The Hill Climb, sponsored by the Hill Blazers Motorcycle Club, attracts thousands of spectators from across the United States. The community of Logan celebrates America’s birthday each July with a multi-day event featuring the largest parade in Harrison County, games and rides for the kids, and a street dance with a beer garden. Fireworks in the evening on the Fourth cap off the celebration. 712-644-2425

A Logan Chamber of Commerce annual event celebrates the winter season and the upcoming holidays. Includes family activities for all to enjoy.

Friday and Saturday following Memorial Day weekend. Missouri Valley hosts this yearly rodeo at the Harrison County Fairgrounds.  Exciting rodeo events, many children’s activities and live entertainment. 712-592-1670

Held in late October. Come enjoy a spooky good time! Costume judging at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Missouri Valley, followed by a Halloween revelers parade traveling west on Huron Street to the fire station. Hot dogs are served at the firehouse. 712-642-2553

A Saturday celebration in June. This annual community celebration features a parade, as well as fun activities in the city park for kids and adults. 712-646-2431

Held in Missouri Valley’s City Park on four Thursday evenings in June and July featuring a band or musician from the region. Hosted by the Missouri Valley Chamber of Commerce. 712-642-2553, missourivalleychamber.com

Free event at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge held in conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge Week in October. Enjoy planned indoor and outdoor activities hosted by refuge staff, as well as tours of the refuge. Last weekend in June. Pisgah has a parade, carnival, antique and classic car show, food, games, and a teen and adult dance. 712-456-2301

Celebrate the holiday magic of “The Polar Express” at Watson Station Train Depot in Missouri Valley City Park in early December. Activities include steam train rides, hayrack rides, face-painting, a visit from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, holiday goodies, and more.  The holiday family-friendly fun is presented by Wisecup Family Partnership and Watson Station. Held in late October at Watson Station & Depot in Missouri Valley City Park. Enjoy spooky goblins, goodies, haunted train rides, hot chocolate, cider, and cookies.

Bring your little ghost or ghoul and go Trick-or-treating in the campground at Willow Lake. There are other activities for the kids to enjoy as well. Dates vary so check out HCCB Events  or call 712-647-2785 for more information.

Celebrating 54 years, the Woodbine Saddle Club hosts the award-winning Woodbine Rodeo – always the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday following the 4th of July.
